TCHS Dance

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


The Dance Department is part of the Visual and Performing Arts Department.  At Treasure Coast High School, the VPA Department consists of the following classes: dance, drama, band, art (2D and 3D), and graphic design. 

Below is a detailed description of what each dance courses studies.  At the very bottom of the page is where grading procedures are explained.

In addition, each class participates in the annual dance concert, BELIEVE.  This concert is a major portion of a dancers experience at Treasure Coast High School.  It has become an annual event that the entire TCHS family looks forward to.



DANCE 1

Dance 1 specifically studies beginner and intermediate jazz dance technique.  Students will develop the following basic knowledge and skills that are necessary to succeed as a dancer:              
1.  Define dance as an art
2.  Define dance as a sport
3.  Demonstrate knowledge of important movement elements, such as dynamic and musicality
4.  Describe and practice a healthy dance lifestyle
5.  Practice basic choreography skills
6.  Gain performance preparation and experience
7.  Demonstrate knowledge of dance history as it relates to the jazz dance styles and pop culture
8.  Analyze, critique, defend, and relate to dance performances

DANCE 2

Dance 2 specifically studies intermediate and advanced jazz technique.  Modern technique and contemporary styles will also be introduced.  Students will develop the following knowledge and skills that are necessary to succeed as a dancer:
1.  Define dance as an art
2.  Define dance as a sport
3.  Demonstrate understanding of important movement elements, such as dynamic and musicality
4.  Describe and practice a healthy dance lifestyle
5.  Practice advancing choreography and rehearsal skills
6.  Gain performance preparation and experience
7.  Demonstrate knowledge of dance history as it relates to the jazz and modern dance
8.  Analyze, critique, defend, and relate to dance performances

DANCE 3

Dance 3 studies the three major technical dance forms:  jazz, modern, and ballet.  Other dance forms and cultures such as contemporary and hip hop will be highly involved also.  Choreography skills and workshops will be included as well.  Students will develop the following knowledge and skills that are necessary to succeed as a advanced dancers and performing artists.
1.  Define dance as human expression, language and a means of story-telling
2.  Demonstrate advanced-level understanding of important movement elements, such as      
     dynamic and musicality
3.  Practice advanced choreography and rehearsal skills
4.  Practice a proactive dance lifestyle
5.  Build a dance portfolio
6.  Gain performance preparation and experience
7.  Demonstrate knowledge of dance history as it relates to all dance styles and their cultures
8.  Analyze, critique, defend, and relate to dance performances


GRADING PROCEDURES

50%        Participation, improvement, effort, and conduct is graded daily
25%        Evaluations, Projects, and Tests
15%        Quizzes
10%        Homework and Classwork

All major evaluations and projects are evaluated on a 5.0 scale based on Robert Marzano's theory and book, The Art and Science of Teaching.  Daily participation and effort in class is also evaluated this way.
